Hardwar Download + Description (CTD fix, 12/29/08)

Hardwar is an open-ended flying game by Gremlin Interactive Ltd. and The Software Refinery Ltd.
There is no point to it, however it can be a good laugh for Multiplayer purposes, especially when you start hiring NPCs to do dirty work for you and purchase your own buildings, which can manufacture and sell goods, weapons, or even ships if you like.
This was available for free download at the-underdogs.org. It was a demo, however there was an official patch that upgraded it to the full game, and I have since taken the liberty of patching the game with both official and community patches. If you're looking for something new to try out with other 88 Flak players, give this a shot.

Hardwar Download + Description (CTD fix, 12/29/08)

Post by fox » Sat Aug 16, 2008 1:45 am

This can be downloaded at http://www.memes.no/88flak/downloads/Hardwar.exe. Installation is a standard "pick directory and install" process; the installer itself was packaged courtesy of M0tah.

I'll post more info (and screenshots) on the game shortly. For real this time. XD

##1 - Introduction:
------
Hardwar is an open-ended flying game set on a small moon named Titan. Once a thriving mining colony, it was forced into political turmoil when the corporate-powers-that-be pulled the colony's funding, forcing the remaining colonists to fight amongst themselves for survival. Over time, two factions - Lazarus and Klamp-G - began to rise in power, and now vie for control of Titan's individual craters. Between this, rising amounts of independant piracy (of which the local police forces sometimes turn a blind eye to), and a mysterious threat that looms on the horizon, many wonder if the population of Titan will ever find peace.

The answer is "highly unlikely," so it's time to strap in, load your weapons, and see what lies ahead in the city of misplaced optimism.

------
##2 - Installation Instructions:
------
Automatic installation from packaged installer:
1. Install Hardwar to a directory of your choice.
2. If you allowed the installer to place Start Menu shortcuts, launch the game using those. If not, open Hardman.exe in the Hardwar folder.

Manual installation from ZIP:
1. Extract the 'Hardwar' folder to a folder of your choice, for example "C:\Games" or "C:\Program Files". etc.
2. Open Hardwar.reg in the Hardwar folder. This is normally created by the demo install, however if you were to install that then you'd have to download all of the patches, and there's a LOT of them. It's a pain. Trust me.
3. Open HardwarEopt.exe in the Hardwar folder. Select 'Paths' under Group (left column), and make sure ALL paths point to your hardwar folder - they, by default, point to "C:\Games\Hardwar", where I have it installed. Ignore source path, it's where the demo install was run from.
3. Open Hardman.exe in the Hardwar folder.

If all worked well, it shall present to you a launcher.
Configure the game from there, and then start 'er up, matey.

------
##3 - General Information:
------
This was available for free download at the-underdogs.org. It is technically a demo version, however there was an official patch that upgraded it to the full game. The game has been fully patched with both official (UIM.06) and community patches (Enhanced2) and is ready for playing.

If you plan to play Hardwar online with others whom are also using this package, it would be best to not alter any of the files (aside from configuring options in the launcher) to ensure maximum stability.

If you would like to not use either Smurph's Enhanced2 patch, delete the "Enhanced2" file in your Hardwar directory.
If you would like to not use my rebalance patch, delete the current "HardwarW.exe" file in your Hardwar directory and rename "HardwarW.exe.foxbackup" to "HardwarW.exe".
Note: Max's Enhanced community patch is not included in this install - while there are some nice benefits to the Enhanced patches, such as a fully dynamic economy and HUD upgrades, there are some stability issues created from these patches. Thus, only Smurph's Enhanced2 and my rebalance patches are included.

##4 - Gameplay Information / Tips:
------
There is no point to Hardwar, as it is an open-ended game, however it can be a good laugh for Multiplayer purposes, especially when you start hiring NPCs to do dirty work for you and purchase your own buildings, which can manufacture and sell goods, weapons, or even ships if you like.

Hardwar is best played with a Joystick, however it can be played with a keyboard and mouse, and rather well, too - it takes a bit of time to get used to the mouse flight as it's very touchy, but it works all the same, and is the control style I prefer.

I'll leave you to figure out most of the game - there's way too much to sum up here. One thing I will however explain is the 'Terminal' - hit O to bring it up, by default. It acts as a sort of console, and is mostly used for hired NPC managment, should you hire any. I'd type help as soon as it's open, it'll give you a big list of commands. Most of them should be self-explainatory, and if you type one in it'll tell you how to use it. Some commands, however, are not listed in the in-game help; I've documented those below at the end of this file.

Don't pester me how to do advanced stuff like organizing a bunch of hired NPCs, running manufacturing facilities, etc. For one thing, figure it out, that's part of the fun (I've included a few things collected from various sources in the Documentation folder), and for another thing I have no clue how to do stuff like manufacturing myself, so you'll just have to experiment.
The game really does have an impressive amount of depth, so don't give it up in one night - stick with it, it really is rather fun.

Also, DO NOT, if at all possible, leave the game when your ship is in space. An autopilot will attempt to bring you to the nearest building, even if you can't dock there. This means your character will GET STUCK in an endless dock loop and WILL HAVE TO BE KILLED. If your computer is going to crash, make sure it crashes indoors. ;)

Finally, don't die. You will lose your character, and will be unable to use your name again. You have been warned. ;P

My E-Mail is astrout89@gmail.com. I go on AIM by the name of foxUnit01, and my MSN Messenger (preferred method) is foxUnit01@hotmail.com
If I use anything else, chances are the name contains "fox" "Unit" and "01" in it, in that order. (I also go by the name bloodfox01 and RocketTurd! in some games)
If you ever want to play some Hardwar, give me a buzz! I love playing this old relic. =D

##7 - Changelog:
------
08/17/08 - Fixed installer that doesn't fail the registry setup
08/23/08 - Developed my own patch to rebalance Cells (power supplies), Engines, Cargo Pods, and finally Ships
12/29/08 - Fixed F7 Inventory Display CTD issue that resulted from my patches

Yes and No.

It's kind of like one (sci-fi setting and all), but you don't actually go into space. Fox or someone, correct me IF I am wrong.

Actually, I own the game and I've been meaning to get back to it. It's all set on the surface of Titan and after the betrayal of your character.

Problem with the game though it wasn't designed for mouse flight like FL, It requires a joystick to fly...unless you want to use the keyboard.

This is from the back of the Hardwar Box:
"Welcome to the city of misplaced optimism...

Once a thriving mining outpost on the moon of Titan, its corporate backers pulled their funding and left the colonists to fend for themselves. Centuries of political turmoil followed, giving rise to a stalemate between the two factions determined to control the scarce resources needed for survival.

As far as your concerned, they can have them. You want off the dismal rock, and will do anything to acquire the equipment you need to build your MOTH's power back up to escape the moon's orbit. By keeping a close eye on the comm chatter, you can pick up simple jobs like Escorting or Salvage work. Be careful, hundreds of years of interbreeding, wholesale cloning and genocidal "cleansing" have created a race of scavangers that could only be tenuously called Human."
Edit: For those who want to play this game you should make sure that you get the UIM06 Patch for it. It solves tons of problems for XP and Vista users. UPDATED UIM06 WITH A WORKING LINK

Fox's download of the game already has the UIM.06 patch.

Using the mouse is quite difficult to get used to since the tilt up and down are reversed (meaning up goes down and vice versa) and there is no way to change it (to my knowledge). Mostly I just use the Joystick since it leaves the keyboard free for other things like navigating menus and such.

As for UIM06, I have the original CD so I didn't know what was in the download or what version it was. This was just a precaution in case it wasn't a patched version.

I actually have a question for the people who did download Hardwar from here: Does it retain all of the music from the CD?

I've made a true installer for the Hardwar compilation that Fox made - no manual install necessary. If you've had trouble getting the game to work, try using it, since it automatically configures the game correctly. It can be downloaded here.

I don't think so - there's no music in the game at all for me.

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't have any real problems adjusting to the mouse flight - it's just replicating a joystick, where up is down and down is up.

I guess it's CD only then. I'll try to get the music working for the download so you can listen.

Also, I've noticed something missing from the download called "Econmod.dll". After a quick search I managed to find the most recent version. The Econmod download also contains an updated versions of the "Enhanced" and "Manufdat" Files.

Edit: Also if "Use Force Feedback" is on in the Control settings and you try to start up or continue a game, it will crash during load up. Just turn it off and it should be fine.

I actually helped beta test that version for a while - however, it is extremely unstable, and while it sports some nifty features such as proper player-hangar trade missions and the ability to manufacture ships in your hangar, there are significant issues with AI queing and general economy stability.

The patches present in my packaged version of Hardwar are the best mix of Max's Enhanced and Smurph's Enhanced2 patches that I could find - while I believe I used the latest Enhanced2, I specifically used an older, more stable Enhanced so that netplay was more viable. If we were to ever play Hardwar, what's packaged in my upload would probably be the best combo to use.

Also, I'm not replacing Flak with this game. It's simply one that I've played for a while, and figured I'd share with the rest of you guys - maybe we can get some games going sometime.

Actually, I had the same problem with the Files contained in the download. The AI seem to really like Psycho Bob's since they clutter up the area and lag the entire game to nothing.

Updated with a fixed installer that doesn't fail the registry setup. I made an error in the install script; sorry folks. It's fixed now.
